August Julius Knitter’s Family immigrated to the United States and settled in the town of Wanatah, Indiana.   In 1881 August and his daughter Emma traveled on the ship Leipzig from Bremen, Germany.  Later his wife and other children followed.

August was born in 1850 in the small village of Niesewanz, which is very near the town of Konitz, West Prussia.  Today both are located in Poland.

August was the son of Johann Knitter and Caroline Strehlke who had six children.
